Fienix 3.0

Lots of big news!

Fienix 3.0, Codename Soar, has been released. The website has been updated and new images have been posted. Instructions to boot Fienix on Open Firmware systems, such as Apple G5 systems, have been simplified greatly.

New versions of Interweb, Spiderweb, LibreOffice and many other applications are available in the repositories. New applications include a special edition of GIMP, and the latest versions of Kdenlive, Flowblade, Inkscape, Scribus and RawTherapee. KDE Connect has been integrated into Fienix, providing connectivity to Android devices. An entire suite of educational software is now available as well.

  1. Hi. I'm trying to run this on a G5 powermac 7,2 but the boot command doesn't work I've tried zapping PR and NV ram. Tried a number of boot commands in open fireware but nothing. Anyone any ideas?

    1. My G5 also doesn't want to boot from USB.
Put the disk image on a free HDD, edit yaboot.conf and start from open firmware.
Edit ofboot.b, and you can also boot from the icon when turning on the computer (with the alt key).

  2. Thanks appreciate it. That was bang on. Worked fine from hard drive with yaboot and ofboot updated. Also on first boot of mate I got a garbled image. Curiously mate was setting the default resolution to one beyond my GPUs capabilities. So doing a modes "1024x768" in xorg.conf fixed it. So happy days. If there is somewhere to donate to this fine distribution please fire it my way. The effort gone into this is greatly appreciated.

    1. Hi, please forgive my ignorance (tried to google my way through this, but got lost). I put Fienix disk image on a spare hard drive and edited yaboot.config with sudo nano, changed dev=ud to dev=hd and saved. Replaced original hard drive in G5 with spare. I booted from Open Firmware which took me to a screen with FIENIX as the header. However, I got this message:

ud:3,/boot/vmlinux: Unable to open file, Invalid device

Was my original edit in yaboot.config correct? Is there additional editing or another step to perform? Thank you for any help you can offer.
